Counsellor & Therapist in Whangārei
with a major in Psychology
I’m Jana, Originally from Estonia, with chapters of my life spent in Sweden, I now call New Zealand my home. My own journey across cultures has given me a deep appreciation for the unique challenges people face as they navigate transitions, relationships, and personal growth.
I offer in-person counselling for individuals and couples from my central Whangārei office, as well as online therapy for clients across New Zealand and worldwide. Sessions are available in English, Swedish, and Estonian.
My work focuses on supporting people through a range of experiences, including relationship challenges, cultural adjustment, stress and anxiety, self-esteem, life transitions, and communication difficulties. I draw on evidence-based approaches such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), as well as person-centred and emotionally focused methods.
At the heart of my counselling philosophy is the belief that the relationship we have with ourselves shapes how we experience the world. My role is to create a warm, safe, and nonjudgmental space where you can explore that connection, gain clarity, and move toward meaningful change.
I value authenticity, trust, and respect, and I aim to meet each person exactly where they are. Whether you’re seeking guidance for a specific issue or simply a space to reflect and grow, I look forward to supporting you on your journey.

Starting Counselling in Whangārei: What You Can Expect
Beginning therapy can feel like a big step, and my goal is to make the process as comfortable and supportive as possible. Whether you meet with me in person in Whangārei or join an online session, you can expect a calm, private, and respectful space to explore what matters most to you.
Counselling is a collaborative process. Together, we’ll identify the challenges you’re facing and work toward meaningful goals at a pace that feels right for you. I’ll ask questions to help us understand your situation, but you always choose what to share. You can focus on the past, the present, the future, (or a combination) depending on what feels most helpful for you.
You decide how many sessions you’d like and when you feel ready to finish counselling. I may offer optional activities between sessions to help you get the most out of our work together. My approach includes evidence-based methods such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), person-centred counselling, and emotionally focused strategies.
Sessions are 50 minutes and available for individuals or couples, either in person or online via WhatsApp or FaceTime. All sessions are fully confidential.
ONLINE ONLY
Meet Co-Counsellor Otta.
Otta is a nosey French bulldog with a curious nose and a big heart. He often joins online sessions, quietly snoring in the background while keeping a watchful eye (and ear) on everything that’s said.
Though he may not offer clinical advice, Otta takes his role seriously — bringing calm, warmth, and a touch of lightheartedness to your session. He’s also an honorary member of the J Counselling team, proudly following the Code of Ethics with his paw-print promise of complete confidentiality.
